DIY Smoked Salt
Last week we talked about Smoked Salt and how I loved to use it in my kitchen. That inspired me to share with you today my DIY Smoked Salt tutorial. Now, don’t run away screaming. This is so easy. And It is something you can do on a Saturday afternoon with hardly any special equipment.
The Many Uses of Smoked Salt
Before we get into the how of making smoked salt. Let’s talk about how you could use smoked salt. Think with me for a minute of all the things you would normally grill, but it’s cold outside. So, you come up with some way to cook it inside or you use stovetop/indoor grill. One thing both of these will be lacking is that smoky flavor. This is the perfect place to use your DIY Smoked Salt instead of your regular salt.
I also love to add smoked salt to my vegetables. Whether I am sautéing them or roasting them, the smoked salt adds a depth of flavor I just cannot achieve any other way. And it is especially good on asparagus! And rubbing a whole chicken down with smoked salt, olive oil, lemon zest and rosemary then roasting in the oven would be AMAZING!
Let’s Smoke Some Salt
Now I promised this is not a complicated process. I made a video showing exactly “how-to” DIY this yourself. However, here are the basic items you will need.
Items you need for DIY Smoked Salt:
Wood pellets like are used in a wood pellet grill (Trager, Pit Boss, Etc.)
Aluminum foil
8×8 aluminum cake pan
Each of the above items are linked to Amazon items that are identical or as similar as I could find to my own. If you know someone with a pellet smoker, they might give you a quart zip bag of pellets for your project. Like I said in my video, any closed/ fireproof vessel will work. Even a large clay flowerpot and large clay saucer. You will just need to measure to ensure that they 8×8 pan and smoker tube will both fit inside the flowerpot.
Here on At Lara’s Table I have recipe you can try once you smoke your own salt at home. My Homemade Andouille Sausage uses smoked salt to add that smoky flavor without actually smoking the sausage. I wanted the sausage fresh for another one of my recipes, Creole Dirty Rice. I like to brown the sausage like you would a ground beef so it will evenly distribute throughout the dish.
