Quick and Easy King Cake

King Cake on a cake board
Ready for Mardi Gras!

Hi friends, as Mardi Gras season quickly approaches. I was thinking about one of Mardi Gras’ Classic Celebration desserts, the king cake. With that iconic dessert in mind, I came up with my own version called the Quick and Easy King Cake. I know many of you are so busy working from home, helping with virtual school, or you just don’t want to spend 6 hours in the kitchen. That is why I dreamed up a hack for the dough used in this King Cake. Let’s get started!

Now I chose a frozen bread dough that was a loaf bread. Something like you would make a sandwich on. I was looking for something that would have a soft texture. In my grocery store this was the closest thing I could find. (I will include a picture below) And I followed the quick thaw instructions. You can thaw your dough however suits your schedule.

Here is the dough I used for my King Cake.

If you watch either of my videos you will see how quickly this Quick and Easy King Cake comes together. Honestly the defrosting of the dough is the longest part. From there you just assemble the ingredients and toss it in the oven. Easy Peasy!

You are welcome to fold your dough in half like I did in my video or you can roll your dough if you want. I will say, stick with two loaves. This thing is HUGE! And three loaves would not bake correctly and you would have raw dough in places.

King Cake fresh from the oven. Not iced yet.

If any of you want a real King Cake recipe with Homemade yeast dough please reach out to me. I am more than happy to do one for you. I just thought a quick and easy hack would be a fun variation to share!

Much Love, Lara

Ingredients

  • 2 rolls of frozen bread dough sandwich loaf style defrosted per package directions
  • 1 stick salted butter melted
  • ¾ c sugar
  • ½ brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Icing
  • 2 c powdered sugar
  • ¼ c milk if icing is thick, add milk 1 tsp at a time to thin
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Sanding sugar in Purple Yellow, Green
  • Plastic Baby or Bean

Instructions

  • Defrost two loaves of your frozen bread dough according to package instructions. Allow dough to rise.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Flour board or counter, roll/stretch dough as thin as you can get it. (mine was approximately 19”l x 5”w)
  • Melt butter in microwave. Mix white sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in separate bowl.
  • Spread melted butter on dough pieces and sprinkle with cinnamon mixture.
  • Fold dough pieces in half or roll them length wise. Then twist them together. Now, stretch twisted dough pieces and form into an oval. Transfer oval onto a sheet tray sprayed with non-stick spray.
  • Bake for 25 mins or until nicely browned. Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack as soon as it comes out of the oven. Being careful during the transfer to support the joint in the dough.
  • While cake cools mix your icing.
  • Mix milk and vanilla into your powdered sugar. You can sift your sugar if you want.
  • Now it is time to hide your baby or bean for good luck. Carefully hide your surprise and proceed to icing!
  • Once your cake is cooled spoon icing over your cake making sure to allow icing to drip down over the sides. Immediately decorate with strips of colored sugar. Alternating Purple, Yellow, then Green.
  • My finished cake measured approximately 15”l x 11”w
